The Roux en Y ProcedureThe Roux en Y procedure is the more invasive and the more permanent of the surgeries offered by Las Vegas Bariatrics. In this procedure, a pouch is created by stapling a small portion of the stomach and essentially separating it from the rest of the stomach. Next, a section of the middle small intestine is branched off and is attached to the pouch. This accomplishes two things. First, by stapling the stomach, the total amount of food that can be consumed at one time is limited. Second, by bypassing the upper small intestine, calorie absorption is reduced. There are risks associated with this procedure. The most serious is a leak between the new stomach pouch and the intestine. This is a rare occurrence, and it will be tested for before being discharged from the hospital. Also, due to the fact that the small intestine is rerouted, bowel obstructions due scaring can occur. The most common risk is the formation of a ventral hernia at the incision site. This along with the bowel obstruction may require addition surgery. Finally as with all surgery, cardiac problems, bleeding, infection, blood clots, and in very rare instances death may occur. |
